Principal's Message

Hello Merrill Mustang Families,

We have had a very mild winter, so far. So please remember to dress your children in layers and make sure they have their boots and snow pants to play on the playground.

We will be focusing on SAFETY this month as a school. Students will be going over expectations for our playground, cafeteria, hallways, and classroom that will keep everyone safe. We will kick this off at our All School Meeting on Thursday, February 6th at 12:00 PM. On Friday that week, wear RED for our HEALTHY HEART wear red day!

FANG is back! The Timber-rattlers, FANG will be coming to visit us on February 10 as well. On Friday that week, we will be having Valentine Day parties in the classrooms. We will have some extra valentines in the office if needed.

Another Family Night is coming up in February as well. On Thursday, February 20th, we will be having a MATH family night from 5:00 - 6:30 PM. There will be free pizza for families, math stations to explore, and math game to take home. It will be an amazing night. Please watch for the sign up sheet to come home and send back with your reservation.

Last but not least, we have a PTO meeting coming up on Tuesday, February 11th from 5 to 6:00 PM  in the Media Center. Come join this great group and help plan some future family nights.

Sincerely,

Tanya Fenner

Keeping Each Other Safe!

Ethan Kuhn, a fifth-grader at Merrill Elementary School was recently recognized by Officer Tony Flaig for a heroic good deed. During lunch recess, Ethan’s quick thinking helped to keep one of Merrill's students, who is young and nonverbal, safe. Staff were so impressed with Ethan's actions, and Officer Flaig recognized Ethan with a bag of Oshkosh Police Department goodies during a surprise visit to Ethan's class. The Oshkosh Area School District has wonderful and caring students! Great job, Ethan!

Yearbook Reminder....

19-20 Yearbook sale is going on now through February 14th. This is the one and only sale we will have for yearbooks so be sure to order yours today.

The cost is 11.50 per book and can be cash or check. ALL CHECKS MUST BE MADE OUT TO NETWORK PHOTOGRAPHY. Please send the envelope back that was previously sent home. If you do not have the envelope, use a blank envelope and fill out your child's name, grade and teacher.

We also have a contest going on to choose our yearbook cover. Students can bring in their loose change to vote for their favorite design.

 OFFICE REMINDERS

  • Students Arriving Late to School:  We have an number of students arriving late for school.  Students are expected to be at school entering the building at 7:40 am when the first bell rings.  If your student arrives in the building after the second bell at 7:45 am, they must stop at the office to check in before going to class. If they arrive after 7:55 it is counted as unexcused.

  • Pick Up After School: For the safety of all students, please make sure that you are on time to pick up your child.  You should be at school when students dismiss at 2:45 pm.  If you are unable to be at school at 2:45 pm, you should make alternate arrangements for your child's pick up.  Please make sure that you keep a consistent routine and that your child knows where to meet you.

  • Change of Clothing:  Students in Grades KG-1 should have an extra set of season-appropriate clothing at school at all times in the event they soil their clothes due to recess activities, lunch spills, bathroom accidents or other health issues.

Winter is here. Friendly weather reminders…

Students should wear a coat when the temperature is 50 degrees or below. Students should have a hat and mittens or gloves when the temperature is 32 degrees or below. If there is snow on the ground, ALL students should have boots and snow pants to be allowed off of the blacktop areas of the playground. Please label your students clothing and boots.

Recess- Students will be indoors for recess when the outdoor temperature is less than 10 degrees, or the wind chill is less than 0 degrees.

Please remember that all this clothing takes a little extra time and school starts at 7:45. We have had a great increase in tardy students so please allow extra time at home to get ready!

PBIS Update

Since we returned to school, classes have been reviewing Merrill Expectations and working on building a kindness board. Students worked together as a class to create an expectations snowman that is displayed outside each classroom. Teachers have been taking pictures of students showing kindness and posting them on a kindness board in the media center hallway.  Next month we will be starting Recess Peer Mediation. Mrs. Yang will be talking to the school about what peer mediators are and how they can help solve problems at recess.
