Principal's Message

Greetings Merrill Families!

Happy New Year everyone! 2020 is going to be a fantastic year for all our families! With a new year starting, a lot people create resolutions. It is always good to have short and long term goals. News Years is a great time to reset and focus on your goals. The goals don't have to be big, even just working on being a better friend, etc are perfect! Below are some friendly reminders as we start off 2020.

*  The first bell rings at 7:40am and all students must be with their teachers no later than 7:45am.  We had a big increase in the number of students tardy in the month of December. Please do everything possible to have your child to school on time, ready to learn.

* Even though it is warmer out right now, Winter is officially here!  This is just a friendly reminder that students who’d like to play out in the field must wear snow pants and boots.  Also, please label all of your child’s winter gear, as items can quickly go missing.  It’s hard to tell one pair of black snow pants from another!!

* Our PBIS theme for January is Being Kind - saying kind words to each other.  Our goal is to help students use their words more when they are happy, sad, upset, etc. We are also focusing on just saying nice things to each other and remembering our manners. Thank you for helping us out with this focus as you practice at home with your children.

  • Students Arriving Late to School:  We have an number of students arriving late for school.  Students are expected to be at school entering the building at 7:40 am when the first bell rings.  If your student arrives in the building after the second bell at 7:45 am, they must stop at the office to check in before going to class. If they arrive after 7:55 it is counted as unexcused.

  • Pick Up After School: For the safety of all students, please make sure that you are on time to pick up your child.  You should be at school when students dismiss at 2:45 pm.  If you are unable to be at school at 2:45 pm, you should make alternate arrangements for your child's pick up.  Please make sure that you keep a consistent routine and that your child knows where to meet you.

  • Change of Clothing:  Students in Grades KG-1 should have an extra set of season-appropriate clothing at school at all times in the event they soil their clothes due to recess activities, lunch spills, bathroom accidents or other health issues.

Winter is here. Friendly weather reminders…

Students should wear a coat when the temperature is 50 degrees or below. Students should have a hat and mittens or gloves when the temperature is 32 degrees or below. If there is snow on the ground, ALL students should have boots and snow pants to be allowed off of the blacktop areas of the playground. Please label your students clothing and boots.

Recess- Students will be indoors for recess when the outdoor temperature is less than 10 degrees, or the wind chill is less than 0 degrees.

Please remember that all this clothing takes a little extra time and school starts at 7:45. We have had a great increase in tardy students so please allow extra time at home to get ready!
